Slips, trips, falls, disability discrimination
The consequence of inadequate luminance contrast is increased public liability (slips, trips, falls) and disability discrimination risks because:
Luminance contrast in new built assets is often ‘guessed’ on site with poor outcomes.
Manufacturer light reflectance values (LRVs) provide a starting point, but when installed, finishes ‘look’ different and do not comply, because prevailing light conditions are different to controlled laboratory conditions.
In existing facilities, maintenance is required. Normal wear-and-tear degrades finishes, reducing luminance contrast.
